Week 1 Drawing skills: adding line, texture and dimension through shading techniques. For this first session participants are introduced to a range of shading and tonal drawing techniques including:  
  • Hatching
  • Cross hatching
  • Blending
  • Stippling
  They’ll create a series of experiments using varying forms of shading and will then follow the tutor to create a step-by-step still-life drawing of fruit, applying different forms of shading to add dimension. Materials
  • Pencil
  • X2 sheets of paper (Cartridge or watercolour)
  • Eraser
Week 2 Introduction to the colour wheel and complimentary colours Participants are introduced to the colour wheel with focus on complimentary colours. Participants go on to follow the teacher or create their own grid of still-life objects and colour in each section using their favourite complimentary scheme. Materials  
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Eraser
  • Watercolour paints or felt-tip pens
  • Thick paper (ideally watercolour or cartridge)
  • Assorted paintbrushes
Week 3 Illustrate a landscape using complimentary colours For session 3 students will learn about perspective and how to illustrate a landscape/scene. Building up from skills learned in week 2 they will then chose their own complimentary colour scheme and paint the landscape using these colours. Materials
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Watercolour paints or felt-tip pens
  • Assorted paintbrushes
  • Thick paper (ideally watercolour or cartridge)
  • Container/jar of water
Week 4 Exploring watercolours: colour mixing, creating textures with salt and wet & dry painting For this session participants will be introduced to primary and secondary colours, they will then mix paints to create a range of secondary and tertiary colours/shades. We will then go on to explore wet & dry painting and how the paints react to salt, resulting in a series of mini-artworks.   Materials
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Watercolour paints
  • Assorted paintbrushes
  • Thick paper (ideally watercolour)
  • Container/jar of water
  • Small amount of table salt
Week 5 Create a folklore inspired floral or Monster/face collage from recycled materials. In this session participants will develop their gross motor-skills and by cutting a series of shapes from recycled papers/objects to create a beautiful, folklore inspired floral (or monster face) artwork. We will also talk about sustainability and the importance of recycling/re-purposing. Materials
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Watercolour paints/poster paints/felt-tips
  • Paintbrushes
  • Gluestick or PVA glue
  • X1 sheet of thick paper (ideally watercolour or cartridge A3 or A4 size).
  • Patterned or colourful recycled materials for collage - a few examples would be: sweet wrappers/tinfoil/patterned paper bags/fabric scraps/coloured paper/card.
  • Jar/container with water.
  Week 6 Create a wax-resist under-the-sea scene For this session participants will be introduced to wax/oil as a resist to water.   We will start with experimenting to discover how different colour crayons react to various shades of watercolour and will then follow the teacher to create an under-the-sea scene (students can follow tutor and adapt/add in additional sea-life creatures).
